This past week or so, I’ve been getting acquainted with a whole new level of cold weather. It was rare to even go below freezing in TX — same for eastern NC where I grew up. But here in NNY? Yeahhh– we’ve been below zero quite a few times here, and this weekend had seriously dangerous wind chills of -30. The kids have a two-hour delay tomorrow and I’m not sure whether it’s because the side roads still need to be plowed or because of the temperatures — it’ll be -12F when my teen would normally be out there waiting for the bus!
It’s so beautiful though, this area right now. I’m in love with the North Country even on the bitterly windy winter days when my face feels like it wants to vacation near a volcano. Winter’s beauty has always mesmerized me, and I’m glad to know that it wasn’t just because I’d had so little of “real” winter in my life.
Who wouldn’t sing praises to An Cailleach for everyday discoveries like this?
I used to feel very backward for preferring autumn and winter over spring and summer. But when I’m surrounded by the brilliance of falling leaves or stopped in my tracks by the gorgeous clarity of frost on a pane of glass, I can’t feel anything but exultation that I’m alive and joy that this moment is mine to savor.
What’s your favorite season? Does winter have you wanting to hibernate, or dancing in the snow?
My favorite has got to be spring. All the flowers blooming, and the bright yellow-green of the trees leafing out, and the relief that winter is finally over. Seems a long way off right now.
