Mel’s Monday Musings: January 14, 2019

Hey, y’all! It’s time for our irregular-AF check-in on various things. To that end, what are you currently reading?

I just finished The Beekeeper’s Promise (Fiona Valpy) and WOW. Even if WWII-era historical fiction isn’t your thing, this one’s worth a read. What a moving story.

In fantasy, I’ve really enjoyed The Keeper Chronicles by J.A. Andrews. Can’t wait for the next book!

Last year, early in the year, I read Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand in the Sun, and Be Your Own Person by Shonda Rhimes. If you never picked that one up, I highly recommend it. I don’t read as much nonfiction as I used to, and I generally shy away from any books written by popular-at-the-moment public figures (meh), but this one is worth your time.

My “To Read” pile is ever-growing; I think I’d need a few extra lifetimes to get through everything…but I’m always up for suggestions. I don’t usually read horror/anything with extremely graphic violence (I end up with vivid nightmares), but almost anything else is fair game, so I’d love to hear about books you’ve recently enjoyed!

I don’t watch much TV (though I did catch up on seasons 4 & 5 of When Calls the Heart recently — was not expecting that show to rip my heart out and stomp on it but there ya go, heh)…is there anything else good on?

And movies…again, I don’t go often (partly because crowds, but mostly because it’s so freaking expensive compared to spending a couple bucks to rent something on Amazon or watch on Netflix in the comfort of my own space!) but I would like to see the new Mary Poppins movie once it’s available to stream.

There are those who find my taste in movies/shows almost childish, and I understand where they’re coming from — but I have to be careful about the entertainment I choose, because it stays with me and I feel it so deeply, even though I know it’s just a story brought to life onscreen.

Anyway…let me know what you’ve enjoyed reading or watching lately!

  1. I am absolutely the same about movies and TV. empath problems, frankly. there’s a long list of stuff I can’t go see. mostly around violence and horror.

right now I’m rereading a favourite fantasy series: the Mercedes Lackey Valdemar books. I’m only on book 2 of 15.

otherwise, I’m reading the Bullet Journal Method by Ryder Carroll because I’m still setting up my bujo.
lastly, I’m going to be beginning My Little Ikigai Journal by Amanda Kudo because I’m in a year that ends with a 0 age-wise and I like to check in on everything and look towards the next 10.
